MY son, a third-year student at James Cook University, arrived in Melbourne for the first time on his own to visit his brother, who has recently moved to Victoria.

He buys a concession ticket using his Australian university ID.

Wrongfully, he rests his leg on a seat in front and is approached and issued an infringement notice for $212.

When his ticket is checked he is issued another infringement notice for $212 as a Queensland University ID is not valid.

Being timid, he apologises and explains he has just arrived and honestly believed he would qualify, but this is to no avail.

The infringement notices were subsequently appealed and the "standard" response was issued declining the appeal.

A request to pay by installments was also declined and a 90 day extension offered instead.

We cannot afford to pay this ludicrous $424 fine as we fund his living on campus fees.

Try discussing this with the government department and the response is go to court or pay the fine.

Given the circumstances, a first warning would have sufficed. We are in no hurry to visit Victoria.

Well done!! Yes fight back!! Lodging counter damage claims bigger than the fines themselves is a great way to wake people up to the huge amount of crime and harm that's being done daily destroying our families and people's lives.

    Victorian Public Transport Infringement Notice
My friend's daughter received a $212 fine for not carrying a concession ticket with her whilst on a public bus on her way to TAFE. She even had credit on her MYKI card. There was no intent to do harm let alone commit an offence. They didn't let her off with a warning or even give her say 7 days to present the concession card. Instead they humiliated her on a packed bus. She was in fact harmed.

So what you say people, what is the best approach to handle these abhorrent fines by fascists at the root level?
