Victoria Legal Aid should seek an immediate explanation from its chairman over professional-misconduct allegations against him, the State Opposition said yesterday.
Shadow attorney-general Robert Clark said the allegations against prominent ALP-linked solicitor and Victoria Legal Aid chairman John Howie were serious.
"It's important for public confidence in the legal system and the standards of government as a whole that these allegations be properly and impartially investigated by the Legal Services Commissioner," Mr Clark said. "Victoria Legal Aid should also be seeking from Mr Howie an immediate explanation of what has transpired."
The Age reported on Monday that Mr Howie, who also chairs Film Victoria, VicSport and is a board member of several other State Government agencies, is being probed by Legal Services Commissioner Victoria Marles over allegations of professional misconduct and failing to inform a client of his work for a religious sect.
Victoria Legal Aid managing director Tony Parsons declined to comment yesterday.
