Police have fatally shot a man who would not drop his knife in a caravan park south of Newcastle, the NSW Police Force says.
Two police officers went to the caravan park at Belmont, at Lake Macquarie, about 5pm (AEDT) on Friday after reports of a domestic assault.
"Police were approached by a man believed to be in his 40s who was armed with a knife," police said in a statement.
The man failed to comply with police directions to drop the knife, so police used capsicum spray on him.
"The man continued and was shot by police and subsequently died," the statement said.
The man was a mental health patient who had been on medication for schizophrenia, Channel Seven reported.
The shooting would be fully investigated by a critical incident team and a report would be prepared for the coroner, police said.
Staff at the caravan park, named in media reports as Spinnakers Leisure Park, refused to comment on the shooting.
A spokeswoman for Ambulance Service of NSW said the man was confirmed dead at the scene.
"We responded to a report of a gunshot wound at 5pm (AEDT) tonight and unfortunately the person was confirmed deceased at the scene," she said.
