Customs officials said the conviction of a 28-year-old Indonesian man over the importation of child pornography sent a strong warning that Australia was tough on the crime.
Alex Lisan, of Chadstone, on Friday pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates' Court to a charge of importing child pornography and images of abhorrent material.
He was sentenced to three months' jail fully suspended for 12 months on $500 recognisance and placed on the sex offenders register for eight years. For the import of abhorrent material he was convicted and fined $10,000.
Customs national manager of investigations Richard Janeczko said the case highlighted its efforts to protect the community from such material.
"Customs and the community views attempts to smuggle child pornography seriously," Mr Janeczko said.
"This is not a victimless crime."
Customs said Lisan was arrested after he arrived at Melbourne International Airport on a flight from Indonesia on May 23 when a baggage examination located an external hard drive.
On examination investigators said they found 28 photographs and 11 video depicting children under the age of 18 engaged in sexual activity. A further 19 video files contained abhorrent material.
