CHILDREN under 16 are now banned from intimate body piercing under laws designed to prevent "inappropriate damage to their bodies", New South Wales Community Services Minister Linda Burney says.

Under the laws passed today by NSW Parliament, piercing and tattoo operators could face fines of up to $22,000 if they perform an intimate piercing on a child.

Children under 16 will also need parental consent if they want any other type of piercing, under the new laws.

"The new laws will make it illegal for young people under 16 to have intimate body piercing done," Ms Burney said in a statement.

"This means piercing to their genitals or nipples.

"Children and teens wanting any other type of piercing will also need to get mum and dad's okay if they are under 16.

"This is about making sure that parents have a say in their child's health and wellbeing."

Ms Burney said the laws around body piercing would stop children exposing their private parts to adults. They also make it an offence for a person under 16 to have what is known as branding, beading or scarification performed on their body without the consent of a parent or carer.

"These highly unusual procedures seem to be on the increase," she said.

"Similar to a tattoo, they result in permanent scarring to the body, so we want to make sure mum or dad provides consent.

"I hope this gives parents peace of mind that they will have a say in what their children are doing to their young bodies - and children some pause for thought before they make this big, and permanent decision."
