POLICE in Queensland are hunting for a Cairns man who allegedly doused his two young kids and their mother in petrol and set them alight inside their Earlville home this morning.
The Cairns Post reports the mother, her four-year-old son and four-month old baby daughter are being treated for burns in Cairns Base Hospital.
Police said a 32-year-old man was seen fleeing the Lissner Crescent house as it was engulfed in flames about 9.30am. The man is described as being of Torres Strait Islander appearance, wearing blue jeans, no shirt and was last seen running towards the Mooroobool area.
Police and fire investigators have taped off the area around the home after authorities were alerted to the blaze by repeated calls to 000 from neighbours.
Witnesses told The Cairns Post they saw plumes of smoke rising from the house at about 9.30am.
"The flames coming out were quite horrendous and it was really surprising how far they had gone up," a witness said.
"I'm just glad they got the people out quickly."
Doctors in the hospital's emergency department are assessing the mother and two children but details of their injuries are yet to be released.
