A JAPANESE woman kept her daughter prisoner in their home for eight years until she turned 19, leaving her too feeble to walk or talk properly, officials and media reports said today.
The daughter, now 21, had been under house arrest since she was a primary school student in the northern city of Sapporo, municipal officials said.
The woman, whose name was withheld, was rescued in 2006 after a neighbour told police about loud shouting coming from the house.
Local authorities went public with the case after it was reported by one of Japan's national newspapers, the Mainichi Shimbun.
The mother showed signs of schizophrenia and was convinced that the school and her husband were harming her daughter, Jiji Press news agency reported.
The daughter was reportedly unable to walk by herself when she was found in the house and could hardly communicate with other people.
The woman, now living in a welfare facility, is still mentally troubled and is receiving education using textbooks meant for students in the first grade of primary school, reports said.
Her father, who was separated from his wife, called the health office in Sapporo in 2005 and tipped it off about his daughter's confinement.
The office apparently only advised him to get the mother to receive treatment for her mental illness and no officials visited the house.
"We should check whether we have a system to correctly grasp the gravity of cases,'' a city official told a nationally televised press conference in Sapporo.
The woman attended only one day of sixth grade, the last year of primary school in Japan, and a total of two days over the next three years of middle school, Jiji Press said.
