AN Australian man has been arrested in Bulgaria and charged with pedophilia.
Police in the Black Sea city of Varna said Canberra-born Australian medic, Joseph Lee Smith, 35, was arrested at an apartment on November 7.
He was allegedly with two under-aged boys at the time. A camera, video camera and CDs were seized.
Local media reported that police also found sex toys and stimulants.
Police alleged that between November 4 and 7, Mr Smith produced pornographic materials and had sexual contact with three under-aged boys.
The Varna Regional Court has ordered Mr Smith remanded in custody because he entered Bulgaria on a tourist visa.
He can appeal against the decision on November 18.
If found guilty on the charge of having sexual contact with minors and of creating a pornographic network, Mr Smith could face up to six years' imprisonment.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the Australian embassy in Athens was trying to confirm the arrest and offer help to Mr Smith and his family if necessary.
