A Melbourne man has flown to Sweden to find his two sons, who failed to return to Australia last month following a parental access visit with their Swedish mother.
The children live with their father in Australia and were visiting their mother in Sweden and did not return to Melbourne last month as arranged, Fairfax newspapers report on Wednesday.
The visit was granted by the Family Court and the family involved cannot be identified, Fairfax said.
After the boys failed to return to Australia, the Family Court has ordered the children must live in Australia with their father and must have no further communication with their mother.
Swedish police told Fairfax an arrest warrant has been issued for the woman and Interpol has been notified.
Swedish prosecutor Thomas Malmenby told Fairfax: "We have to find her and we have to speak to her and she has to explain what she has done."
Before he left for Sweden, the father said his sons had told him their mother intended to keep them in Sweden.
"I am very concerned about the children's welfare," he said.
A Swedish court had originally granted him custody of the children with the mother granted access twice a year.
He arranged several visits but could not afford the costs of travel, he said.
The woman applied for and was granted access under the Hague Convention, he said.
Between January and October this year, 121 children were abducted from Australia, the attorney-general's department told Fairfax.
