THE Family Court has been accused of turning Australia into a divided society, riven by bitter custodial and access disputes over the children of broken homes.

Fathers' groups say the court is discriminating against men and increasing the rising cost of family disputes.

They say more fathers who are separated from their children are taking their lives.

A proposal will be put to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to have the Child Support Agency intervene on behalf of fathers denied access to their children.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show about two-and-a-half million Australians are denied access to family because of family law proceedings.

The Sunday Herald Sun has found there were 700,000 children in Australia who had no meaningful contact with one of their non-custodial parents - mostly their fathers.

Another 1.5 million uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents are also denied access.

Barry Williams, President of the Lone Fathers Association, says the family law system needs an overhaul.
