Step by Step for Change this World Suicide Awareness Day.
Wednesday 10th September is World Suicide Awareness Day, Suicide remains the leading cause of death in the UK for men under 50, with 11 lives lost every single day. Separation and family breakdown heighten this risk dramatically.
Research shows separated parents are far more likely to experience suicidal thoughts, with fathers in particular facing disproportionately high risks compared to the wider population.
At Both Parents Matter, we know the right support changes lives. Nearly 40% of separated dads told us they’d experienced suicidal thoughts before coming to us. After our support, 65% felt better able to cope emotionally and 80% felt more confident in managing their situation.
On 10th September, Sam Morfey, the charity’s CEO, and Paul O’Callaghan, the Chair of Trustees, will be walking 11 miles through central London in support of Both Parents Matter. Starting in Parliament Square and finishing at the Royal Courts of Justice. They will also be handing in a petition at 10 Downing Street to raise awareness about the impact that separation, lost contact with children and the challenges of navigating the family court system has on men, leaving many isolated and in crisis.
Get involved!
👉 Join the walk – we’d love you to join us on our walk on 10 September. We will be setting off from Parliament Square at 2pm and arriving at the Royal Courts of Justice at around 5.30pm. If you can’t attend the whole walk it would be fantastic if you could join us at the start or the end for a photo opportunity. Please let us know at naomi.hunt@bothparentsmatter.org.uk if you plan to attend and we will send further details.
👉 Donate – as a charity reliant entirely on fundraisers, it would be fantastic if you would consider making a donation. By sponsoring our walk, you’ll be helping to prevent more families from facing the devastating impact of suicide. Every donation, large or small, will make a difference.
