Nurses in Victoria found guilty of serious offences including manslaughter, sex offences and torturing animals have been given approval to care for sick and vulnerable patients.

Nursing authorities in Victoria have in the past three years approved registration of more than 100 nurses who had admitted being found guilty of crimes including stalking, drug trafficking, possessing child pornography and manslaughter, News Limited newspapers said.

The revelations - outlined in documents obtained through Freedom of Information requests - have led to calls from patient advocates and the state opposition for an investigation of registration of some nurses.

Since 2006, nurses have been required to disclose their crimes when renewing their annual registration.

Among the more serious cases, a nurse convicted of manslaughter in 1994 was allowed to re-register, as were three nurses found guilty of indecent assault and two who were found guilty of cruelty to animals, Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper said.
