A woman accused of trying to drown her newborn in a toilet is now being investigated in the death of another infant, after police found a decomposed baby's body in her home.
"This is a very disturbing case," Columbia, Illinois police chief Joe Edwards said at a press conference Monday.
Elyse Mamino is accused of putting her newborn daughter, Victoria, face-first in a toilet and leaving her gasping for air and kicking her tiny legs on November 15, shortly after giving birth at a family party.
Someone in the home called police, who found the unconscious infant still in the water-filled toilet bowl, Edwards said.
The baby was rushed to hospital where she was revived and eventually returned to her mother, despite protests from police.
Mamino was arrested and charged with attempted murder on Friday, one day after police found the decomposed infant in the Belleville, Illinois home she shares with her boyfriend.
Mamino has not been charged in the death of the infant, believed to have been born in 2007.
However, child welfare officials have taken away her infant daughter in the wake of the arrest, and have placed the baby in the care of relatives.
