CHILD sex prison terms are set to rise, and Victorians are urged to speak out on sentencing of our most despicable criminals.

The Brumby Government has ordered a review of penalties that haven't changed in 80 years.

The review follows community outrage over a maximum nine-year term for Stephen Maurice, who attacked a girl two weeks after her 10th birthday.

Maurice, who broke into his victim's home at night and attacked her in bed, has appealed against the alleged severity of his sentence.

The maximum penalty for a sex attack on a child aged 10-16 is just 10 years, a penalty unchanged since 1928.

The review will be held by the Sentencing Advisory Council, which wants the public to have their say.
