A VICTORIAN man who arranged through an internet chatroom to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex has been jailed for three months.
Bradley Parson, 22, sent sexually explicit messages to the girl for several months. He asked her if she was a virgin and told her he wanted to have sex with her.
In January 2008, Parson arranged to meet the girl in the toilets at Melbourne's Southern Cross Station, the Victorian County Court heard today.
Leading up to the meeting Parson asked the girl, who he knew as Lisa, if she was a "good girl'' who took the contraceptive pill every day because he did not like to wear condoms.
When Parson arrived at the station, the girl was in fact an undercover policeman and Parson was arrested.
Parson told police he liked the idea of having sex with the girl but never really intended to have sex with "Lisa''.
Police raided Parson's Ballarat unit and found more than 400 child pornographic images and 32 movie files containing child porn.
Parson pleaded guilty to using a carriage service to procure an under 16 for a sexual act and knowingly possessing child pornography.
Sentencing Parson, Judge Liz Gaynor noted he was of above average intelligence, but was a "socially awkward young man''.
She said Parson was involved in the scouting movement, and was first introduced to adult websites at a scout jamboree, but had been expelled since he was charged with the sex offences.
Judge Gaynor said a strong message needed to be sent to the community about the procurement of children for sex over the internet because it was becoming an increasing problem.
"This is most serious offending,'' she said.
"I find I must sentence you to a term of imprisonment to be immediately served.''
Judge Gaynor ordered Parson serve three months in prison and she suspended a further 12 months' prison time for one year.
Parson was also ordered to serve a two-year community-based order on the child pornography charge.
He will be a registered sex offender for 15 years.
