A SEXUAL predator who indecently assaulted five children between 1977 and 2007 should be jailed for up to 26 years, a Melbourne court was told.
Jeffrey Peter Bavage, 47, was found guilty of 14 offences including rape, indecent assault of a child under 16 and carnal knowledge of a girl under 10, over four trials in the Victorian County Court between September 2008 and March 2009.
The offences began when Bavage was 16 and ended with his arrest over the indecent assault of a seven-year-old girl in a Torquay caravan park in January 2007.
Crown prosecutor Brendan Kissane told the court yesterday that Bavage was a predatory offender who had taken advantage of circumstances and relationships to commit his crimes. "The victims in these cases were all children aged between seven and 17 years old. All of the offending was directed towards this very vulnerable group," he said.
Between 1977 and 1983 Bavage sexually assaulted two sisters, aged nine and seven. The girls were family friends and he would visit their bedrooms when they were sleeping and sexually assault them.
In 1993 he raped the 13-year-old sister of his girlfriend.
In 2002 Bavage abducted and raped a 17-year-old family friend. She was on her way to work when he convinced her to get in his car. He then drove to a secluded spot and raped her. He threatened to rape her younger sister if she reported the attack.
He was caught after the 2007 attack.
Mr Kissane said Bavage had 95 convictions for the period between 1980 and 2006, including a number of sexual offences, and should spend 20 to 26 years in jail.
Judge Felicity Hampel remanded Bavage. He will be sentenced on May 13.
